She was born January 30, 1919 in Forrest a daughter of Roy and Martha (Haab) Metz.

Mildred attended the Miller Country School for 8 years. She then went to Forrest Township High School for 2 years. She loved math, a talent which she made use of throughout her life.

She married Everett Masters on November 21, 1940 in Forrest, IL. He died in action in New Guinea on July 13, 1944. She later married Cyril Allen on November 3, 1949 in Forrest, IL. He passed away on March 23, 1970. During their marriage they hosted foreign exchange student, Fernando Claudio, with whom she has maintained contact and considered him a part of her family.

Mildred held many jobs in her lifetime. She did housework for area families usually helping after a new baby was born; she earned $5 per week.

She worked for 10 years at Honegger’s; she also worked at Forrest Hotel and Bachtold Brothers.

Mildred was very active in the Forrest United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1944, and Forrest Women’s Club. She volunteered at Fairbury Hospital snack bar.

She enjoyed doing fabric crafts and cooking. She also loved traveling. An event she fondly anticipated was the “Branson Bus” trip which she enjoyed with family and friends annually for 20 years.

Mildred moved to Fairview Estates assisted living in 2002. She then moved to Fairview Haven in 2010.

She is survived by her sister: Royalene Toombs. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: Earl and Ivan, and her sisters: MaryAnn Plattner, Ruth Thiel, and Betty Nussbaum.

Dear Marlene, Teresa and Families! I remember Mildred well, such a nice lady! She was ever present at the Methodist Church when I was growing up in Forrest, and a good friend to my Mom! Then later we reconnected at FVH AL and we'd visit when I went to visit Opal and my Aunt. I know you'll miss her a whole bunch! My heart goes out to you, Marlene,Teresa and all of Mildred's extended family! 💕 Alice Hodgson Gordon

I am truly sorry that I could not make it back with my sisters to join them at Aunt Mildred's funeral. I always enjoyed her and Cyril. We would visit them and their cabin in Lodi almost every summer. Really enjoyed that time of skiing and fishing. Many great memories. Aunt Mildred always made mush that everyone loved and really that was the only time I had the pleasure of eating that, I am not sure why my Mom never made it.
Tell everyone hi.

Fernando spent the 1967-68 school year as an exchange student from Portugal, sharing Mildred's home, love, and warmth. She and Cyril earned his devotion and respect, so much so that he, and later his wife Anna and daughter Danielle, became lifelong family. Mildred was also a part of Fernando and Anna's extended family. All were very fond of her. Through the years, Mildred enjoyed visits from Fernando's parents from Portugal, Anna's mother and brother from New Jersey, and she often came to see us alone or with her dear sister-in-law Isabelle. We always spent time with Mildred's brothers and sisters and extended family, each trip to Illinois a whirlwind of visits and great meals. We are saddened by her passing, yet comforted and happy to have shared so many years with her. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and loved her.
We miss you "Mom" and "Grandma" Allen.
Fernando, Anna, and Danielle Claudio
